The Switch is based on “The Baster”, a short story from acclaimed novelist Jeffrey Eugenides (The Virgin Suicides, Middlesex), and the script comes from screenwriter du jour Allen Loeb (Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps). We doubt even co-directors Josh Gordon and Will Speck (the “geniuses” behind Blades of Glory and TV’s Caveman) can screw up a project with such bonafides. Though we gather they’ll try their hardest.
Can Jason Bateman do wrong? The wryly sardonic actor has made a living playing the same type of character since his days as Michael Bluth on Arrested Development and it doesn’t look like we should expect that to stop anytime soon.
The first trailer for the artificial-insemination comedy The Switch (formerly and more awesomely known as The Baster), co-starring Bateman and Jennifer Aniston, hit the interwebs today and—spoiler alert—it’s hilarious. To give you an idea: imagine The Back Up Plan, but funny and less soul-deadening.

Not that you need a plot refresher—after all the trailer basically gives away everything—but in case you missed it: Aniston and Bateman play best friends whose relationship runs into trouble when Bateman’s character switches his sperm with her donor (Patrick Wilson, looking suspiciously like Josh Lucas) in a drunken fit of rage. And, wouldn’t you know it, when the two friends reunite seven years later, there is something oddly familiar about Aniston’s offspring…
It’s worth noting that the trailer downplays the relationship between Aniston and Bateman and instead concentrates on the bromance between Bateman and Jeff Goldblum, who co-stars as his best friend. In fact, maybe we’re just really amped for The Switch because it reminded us what a great comedic resource Jeff Goldblum can be in the right role; he got us laughing no less than three times over the course of the trailer. And, frankly, we’d like to imagine a world where Jason Bateman and Jeff Goldblum are BFF.
